🚨 GOOD NEWS FOR ZIMBABWEAN CARE WORKERS IN THE UK! THE GOVERNMENT HAS BACKED DOWN ON THE PROPOSED 15-YEAR WAIT FOR ILR!
If you came to the UK as a care worker or senior care worker, there has been a major development today, 2 November 2026.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced changes to the controversial plans that would have forced some migrants to wait 10 or even 15 years before applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).
Here is what this means for Zimbabweans living and working in the UK.
🇬🇧 1. CARE WORKERS: THE FIVE-YEAR ROUTE IS BEING PROTECTED
This is probably the biggest announcement.
If you:
* Came to the UK or switched into the social care visa route before May 2025.
* Are working in the social care sector.
* Earn at least £25,000 per year.
* Have complied with the conditions of your visa.
You will be eligible to apply for ILR after completing the existing five-year qualifying period, subject to the applicable settlement requirements.
In simple terms, the government has dropped its proposal to make eligible existing care workers wait 15 years.
Example: If you arrived in the UK in 2022 on a care worker visa and have been working in social care, earning at least £25,000 annually and meeting the relevant requirements, you can retain the five-year settlement pathway rather than being pushed onto a 15-year route.
2. WHAT IF YOU ARE A CARE WORKER BUT DO NOT MEET THE CONDITIONS?
The government has also announced a second chance.
Some workers who have not fulfilled the conditions of their original care visa will be allowed to apply for another five-year care visa.
Importantly, they will not be tied to their previous employer. This is intended to help people escape exploitative sponsors and find legitimate employers.
At the end of that additional visa period, they will be able to apply for settlement, subject to the relevant requirements.
3. WHAT ABOUT NURSES, DOCTORS AND OTHER HEALTHCARE WORKERS?
There is also protection for certain healthcare and education workers.
Some public-sector workers, including people in roles such as auxiliary nursing, will retain the transitional five-year settlement pathway.
This protection applies to qualifying workers who joined before the government published its immigration White Paper in May 2025.
Doctors, nurses and teachers are also among the professions identified for the five-year pathway under the new arrangements.
4. WHAT ABOUT EVERYONE ELSE?
Unfortunately, the government has not abandoned its plan to increase the normal settlement period.
Here is how the new framework is expected to work:
* £125,000+ annual earnings: Potential three-year ILR route.
* Over £50,000 annual earnings: Five-year ILR route.
* Healthcare and education professionals in qualifying roles: Five-year route.
* Most other workers earning below £50,000: Ten-year ILR route.
* Eligible existing care workers earning at least £25,000: Protected five-year route.
So, earning less than £50,000 does not automatically mean you will wait 15 years. The general proposed period is now 10 years.
5. NEW REQUIREMENTS FOR ILR
Even if you qualify for the five-year or ten-year pathway, there will be additional requirements.
The Home Secretary has highlighted:
* A good criminal record.
* A high standard of English.
* No unpaid debts to the government.
* At least three years of National Insurance contributions.
* If you have claimed benefits, you must have spent five continuous years without relying on them before applying.
An immigration breach could push your settlement qualifying period to 20 years.
6. DOES THIS MEAN EVERYONE CAN APPLY FOR ILR NOW?
No!
This is an announcement of the government’s revised settlement policy. The detailed Immigration Rules and implementation arrangements still matter.
It does not mean that everyone can immediately submit an ILR application or that all applications will automatically be approved.
You must still meet the relevant requirements and complete your qualifying period.
🇿🇼 WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR ZIMBABWEANS?
For many Zimbabweans who came to Britain between 2022 and 2025 to work in care homes and provide support to elderly and vulnerable people, today’s announcement will bring some relief.
Many people have built their lives here, brought their families, paid taxes, worked long shifts and made significant sacrifices.
The original proposal threatened to change the settlement goalposts for people who had already made decisions based on the five-year pathway.
The government has now made an important concession for eligible existing care workers.
However, if you arrived after May 2025, earn below the required threshold, work outside the qualifying sector or are on another visa category, your position may be different.
DO NOT ASSUME THAT YOUR ILR ROUTE IS FIVE YEARS JUST BECAUSE YOU WORK IN CARE. CHECK YOUR SPECIFIC CIRCUMSTANCES.
We will continue following the announcement and explaining what it means for Zimbabweans in the UK.
